STANDARD issue…. a resurrection begins….

Time to kill today so I started mounting / mocking a few parts up. Mounted battery box, inner fender, and rear fender. Threw a few parts on the frame to keep me inspired.

Also put some attention to my air filters. The old foam was totally roached. One of the filter assemblies also came apart so needed glued back down. I tried some Gorilla glue and seems to be holding well.

That deteriorated foam just disinterested when you look at it. I spent a little time cleaning it up before cutting new UNI foam to fit. I just need to glue the seams together. I can use the same glue, but that seem will turn rock hard. Anyone have suggestions for glueing the ends together? Overall I’m pretty happy with the results.

I'm a little late on this reply, but I've had good luck with sewing the foam on a sewing machine. Sorry, no picts, but adding a strip of fabric or backing on both sides will insure that the thread won't pull through the foam. Did this on my XS2 back in 2015 and after several cleanings in gas or Mineral Spirits, it is still holding up.

The bike is looking good by the way!

You mention optimizers on your pipes. I used to call them fluffer nutters! Had them on my 305 Honda scrambler in 1970. If I came across a cop on a quiet main street, I would just reach back and turn those washers on! It does make a difference.

I also did the 750 kit on my XS2 and I love it. Presently, I have a strange vibration and have my baby in the basement getting ready to remove the engine and pop the bottom open. I'm hoping to find a bad bearing, (Mike's). I hope someone will read this and guide me towards some better than Mike's or OEM bearings. If not, I'm gonna reuse the bearings from a 75 engine that had only 12K miles. Hey, the bearings in my original 72 engine had over 70K miles and they looked and felt fine.

You're probably getting snow in this cold snap, so maybe when you light the fireplace you can light another under your ass and get moving on your bike again. LOL! Hey, my ambition to work on my bike is either real hot or real cold. Once I get restarted, I aint stopping! Have a great Thanksgiving!

The optimizers are inserts that go into the exhaust head port since I am running larger than stock headers. The ends of the exhaust pipes have Snuff-R-Not's installed, which is what I believe you called fluffer nutters.

Yes, plenty of snow here recently. Heading down to Central America for a week to shake the early winter blues. Going to trade in my turkey for lobster this year. Unfortunately a busy family life hinders my progress in the shop these days. But hell, i've got all winter now to finish up my punch list.

These?

MMM at 650 Central has them. So does yamahaxs650.com

I have read about these EPO's and considered buying a set. Does anyone have real set-of-the-pants dyno feedback on their effectiveness?
There was a good bit of discussion about it many years ago on the Micapeak email group. It’s like running the garden hose with no nozzle on it then putting your thumb over the end of the hose to speed the velocity of the stream. It increases velocity of the exhaust gas.

Wow, I just realized it’s been a year and half since I’ve updated this thread. The project is mostly still stagnant but thought I’d update on my seat. I picked up a smaller seat from Motolanna some time ago but never got around to installing it. These seats are made for SR500’s but supposed to fit the xs with a little modification.

They just mount with the little hooks on the front that slide under the rear tank mount. The issue with xs fitment though is that the factory seat hinges and the seat lock interfere with it sitting flush, so off they came. I just used a sawzall and a 4” flap wheel along with a little hammer persuasion to cut them off. Flap wheel smoothed them off and a touch of Rustoleum and Bob’s yer uncle.

I may need to secure a bit more on back, but I’m unsure how just yet. Maybe just some heavy duty Velcro on the fender. The seat pan is plastic and pretty light. It’s good for now till I can play with some more ideas later.

I also picked up a spare set of triple trees to shave down and clean up a bit. Another job for the sawzall and flap wheel. I did this a few months ago and they’ve just been sitting on the shelf for now. I need to pick up a new set of bearings before I can install.

My biggest problem is that I cannot finish one project before starting on another. Maybe it’s ADD or just Mission Creep… I don’t know. I’ve got two other projects that I bounce in between and struggle to stay focused on just one. Story of my life.

At last count I have 6 current bike projects... and that's just the bikes. Truck, VanGo.... a patio, a basement.....
If you were to limit me to one project, I'd be stark ravin' mad by the end of the day... :cautious:

Yeah! I almost forgot about ‘Ol Ligtnin’ 😄 That bike looks like it’d be a hoot to zip around on!
Luv those Snuff-R-Nots!!

I was thinking the same thing! 😉

Story of my life... three active bike projects, two active boat projects, two active car projects, a house/property/family to maintain and a bunch of other properties for which I am responsible one way or another. Me too, I need active projects to absorb all available time, otherwise madness would ensue!

It’s close Bob. It was a runner when I got it but had a blown head gasket. Re-did to top end and completely changed the sheet metal. Just a little electrical and a new battery and it’s ready to fire. It’s got an 80” motor bored .40 over.

Phil, the stock side cover fits but is not removable with the exhaust on. The only thing under there is the air box and VR. Have thought about doing number plates, and I even have some. Just not sure on how to mount. My fab skills are not even on the same planet as yours! I’m a ham-fist fabricator.
