I used a vf500 reg/rect, vf500 stator, banshee rotor. It doesn't really matter what year. All of the banshee rotors are the same for all years if I'm not mistaken. I don't remember what years I used on the stator and the reg/rect. '80s something. I bought a banshee rotor, stator and stator plate all for $50 on craigslist. Ended up selling the stator and stator plate.

Stock banshee stator and rotor are pretty commonly swapped from what I understand.

Yeah, looked on craigslist, nothing for the vf500 or the banshee. Must be more parts in Texas. I guess Texas had to be better then Oklahoma in something.:D I kid, I kid. Well, Ebay it is. Thanks man.

:wtf:
I'll be the first to admit that my answers are probably in the 10,000 posts on the Internet in at least 5 different places, but my eyes are crossed, my head is throbbing and my mouse wrist is numb.:banghead: Please forgive me !

Can a permanant magnet alt (Banshee) be set up for an '83 w/ electronic ignition ????
What thread is best for THIS conversion???
:doh:If not, what the H____ are my options ?

God Bless definitive answers !!!

Welcome jetero41, I wouldn't see why not. It doesn't matter how you get the 12+ volt as long as you get it. I'd think you just have to figure out which wire from the rec/reg goes to the coil and ignitor unit. Sorry, not very definitive.

About as definitive as it gets.

Are you referring to the stock ignition? If so... Then not without converting to a cam driven ignition. i.e. points or pamco

XS-650 Garage Thread started by mrriggs pretty much covers all of it. Some pages in the middle are just "will this item work or not" but the first several pages or so cover the swap in pretty good detail as far as the swap goes IMO, but the schematic linked to in one of the previous posts shows it pretty bare bones (which is nice.)

BigJimmy Thank You for THE definitive answer.
Thanks to all who have replied.
Now I guess I have to figure out what route I'm going to go.
I'd like to keep the "box" ,but I'd sure like the additional output of the PM Alt.
Oh well................
Thanks again all.

Yeah the PMA replaces the "box" as you refer to it. You take stock TCI crank driven ignition alternator off and put a crazy ass pieced together set up.

It's a trade off. I did it because I wanted to eliminate the battery. I'm not running a starter anyway... SO I said what the hell! I wanted to open up the area under the seat rather than try and fill it with a fake oil bag and battery box and battery. Just personal preference. Also the "where is the battery" question makes me smile! Gives me the chance to explain to them how I am running a set up from a couple of different motorcycles to eliminate the battery!

Jetero (or anyone else for that matter), if you have any more questions about the swap let me know. If I can't answer your question I know where to look for the answer or the person to ask.

So bigjim, i got the stator and reg/rec from a 84-86 vf500. My problem is there are 8 wires on the reg/rec. The three yellows I know. I'm guessing that the two red/whites are +12v, the one black is ground, and the two green are there to be pretty. I think I may be wrong about the green though.

Well the 3 wire block from the stator will plug right into the reg/rect which is the whites/yellows. Actually you tie the black in with the reds and the greens are the ground.

Alright, now just have to wait on the flywheel.

Slow ass UPS. The stator, reg/rec, and Mrriggs adaptor all shipped USPS on the same day as the flywheel, they're all here. Where's my flywheel UPS?:banghead: I don't know why people think the damn UPS is so good. USPS and FEDX are way better. Slow ass UPS. Wow, I feel better. Venting is good.:D
Thanks bigjim
