"Wonky"? Well, it's a Seventies thing; so lotsa '70's style was wonky. I like them...in all forms (has to be black on white though).....but, I'm a geek and even retrofitted a compression release starter lever on a G model tracker..

70's "wonky":

Woopsie!
Hey Jeff I've got my foot stuck in my mouth.

I agree the yellow in the pic appears not quite correct. Coincidentally, the yellow on the orange XS2 tank above is actual Yamaha Competition Yellow.
Fwiw... the yellow JP found for his tank looks perfect for Yamaha competition yellow in my eye.

I like the idea that's just a poor version of "speed blocks"..

After some looking most of the Yamaha blocks were kind of wonky.
This style I like......

This version on the Yamaha XJR is nice, I think. The 2016 SR400 also came in a yellow speedblock version, but that is a bit more plain. IMHO.

The problems with yellows are just like reds and whites....theres a million different shades of each one of those colors and its really easy to get it wrong (in my subjective opinion anyway).

I had an 81 Jeep CJ-7 that I specifically wanted painted Corvette Competition Yellow. It took me a long, long time to find just the right tint of yellow back in the mid 90's when I was planning this project on this Jeep.

Then when the painter did the job, he used a different tint of yellow and it was so pale I hated it!! I made his shop do it over again, because it was way off from what I asked for. He eventually got it right and it was beautiful!

So yes indeed, Yamaha Competition Yellow is a tough one to get correct as well, I totally agree. 👍
That's why I ALWAYS do a sprayout card, show it to the customer and make them sign the back of the card if they approve it.

Well, we had already agreed on the color, he admitted he screwed it up after much hemming and hawwing trying to get me to accept a substandard job.

It turned out amazing afterwards though....got compliments everywhere I took that Jeep. 😍

Careful now, JP's got a beautiful yellow tracker in the correct shade of "Yamaha Competition Yellow". 😉👍

Haha yellow is yellow … no man is safe! Haha 😂 😂😂

I get why Yamaha went with yellow for race bikes (it’s easy to see) and all the other good colors were taken haha.

Interesting Yamaha trivia: the Yellow/black started in the US only - appearing on factory racers in '72 and public sale MX'ers in '74 - the European & Canadian racers - both road race and MX - were white/red/black.

Yes, I've always loved the European white base color with red graphics, the contrast is beautiful.

'K..... comin' up on a week for JP's clear coat.... close enough. Time for the cut-n-buff.

Terry ( @46th Georgia ) sent me some 3M Trizact pads last year.... 5 and 8k pads. This is the first chance I've had to try 'em out, other than just playing around with 'em.
Here's where the tank stands right now....

So.... cut (scraped) the dust nibs out with a razor, then 2000, 3000, 5000 and finally... 8000.
Here's what blows my mind... my polish, glaze, wax.... whatever... is still sittin' on the shelf. This is just sanded... still needs polishing....
