cam chain tensioners

I’m getting ready to install the type E on my ‘76. I have everything I need except the highlighted gasket. Parts list shows I need 2? IMG_2813.jpegunless I’m seeing it wrong, why would I need two? Also can I just make my own gasket or is it more like a fiber washer?

It's actually a copper sealing washer, and I'm not sure why the parts diagram calls for 2 (a mistake probably?) because you only need one.

The only measurement I know off hand is that it's about 1mm thick. The O.D. and I.D. shouldn't be hard to figure out though. Looking at Jim's pic, you can see the O.D. is about the same as the round portion of the lock nut. The I.D. will be slightly larger than the screw diameter.

Soooooo I have the type D. Could an enterprising machinist just make his own locknut to "convert" the assembly to a "type E"?

I really want to try this. If anyone can provide some basic dimensions of the locknut, I would appreciate this. The overall length (or thickness) should be the only thing I would need. All the other dims I can figure out myself.

Why do I need to replace the plunger? All I really need is the extra thickness the locknut provides to keep the acorn nut from bottoming out on the threaded shaft.

You need the longer plunger because it allows the adjuster screw to stick out more while applying the same amount of tension, and that provides the needed room for the lock nut. Details are here in my post #22 .....

Now normally, you don't find just the long plunger for sale on eBay, so you end up buying a whole assembly. But they can be had for $20 or less if you shop around and are patient.
