It is a MZ (from east Germany) bike modified with a home made twin cylinder engine.
Yes, tank looks very much MZ250. MZ was the mothership of modern two-strokes. Without the technology from MZ Werke Zschopau, the 60s and 70s Japanese two stroke bikes from Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki may not have happened.

Was there a video here somewhere chronicling MZ development of expansion chamber technology?

A guy who I bought some XS650 parts from has both the Suzuki Gamma and the Yamaha RD500LC (RZ500). They were so far back in his storage 'basement' that I couldn't get a goo look at them. He said they both run.
OMG! I get all starry-eyed just imagining that scenario, me being a big 500GP fanboy.
