I purchased a 77 XS650 last month and it should be delivered next week. There is only so much conveyed in pictures and brief back and forth emails so I am going into this blind. I have done a few auto engine rebuilds over the years and always did my own M/C maintenance since 82 when a dealer stripped sparkplug threads on my XJ650RJ, I did own a very nice '78 XS650 in 79-80 but crash and relocation separated me from it. I bought the attractive Blue and black and white tracker off of classifieds. I assume I will know the ignition system by removing the cam covers and finding either points or a trigger system. BS34 or BS38 by the vacuum chamber covers. What else do I need to consider? Aside, I am Kevin. I sign into new sights with the name of my sail boat for annonyminity . I do that because some user/enthusiast sites can be caustic, but I have not seen that here in any form.

Congratulations! That was a very nice looking bike and you got a great deal on it!

Congratulations Kevin!
Aluminum tops say they're BS38 carbs. Braided wiring from the points cover and dual output green coil say's it most likely Boyer or Pamco ignition. Pull the bottom left cover so you'll know if it's stock alternator or PMA.
Follow down the link Gary gave ya and you'll have a good guide to go by.
Is it supposed to already be a reliable ride?
Oh... and get a front fender or brace for it. :sneaky:

I did not get specifics from seller and when I thought about it
At "80ish" maybe they won't hear it!
Another neighbor has a full dress HD with what I assume are stock mufflers. He rides easy on the throttle and is really pretty unobtrusive.

I have not considered giving up. All that I have seen has been respectful and non judgemental. I can read an ohmeter and do basic observations. This site had so many threads on basic repairs, observations and tuning that I might need guidance on where to go if I have a problem.
Like you I have reasonable mechanical ability; but no specialist skills on the XS650. I bought a visually ready to go machine, but reality is a great leveller. It was poorly prepared and needed a full sort out to be safe to ride. All the regular member on this site are terrifically helpful and supportive. I’ve learnt a lot following their advice, and now freely offer my own thoughts from my XS650 experience. Stick around you will be welcomed.

I fired it up and it seem the Rev real quickly. Is it possibly a 277 motor. Voltage it the battery at 3000rpm indicated was 12.75 but I will recheck after the battery is fully charged. It was at 12.15v when it was off loaded this AM. The delivery was 2 weeks late but I assume they cannot accurately forecast exactly when a full load will happen and patience is better than frustration.

I don't think its rephased to 277. I say that based on the Probe Engineering Iggy, I don't think they made an iggy for 277. I could be wrong about that though.
