It has been "sleeping" a long time but I was surprised to see several corrosion openings through the top of the tank.
I would have expected it to go in the bottom or rear seal first.

Looks like something spilled or possibly pee’d on it?
Rodent piss can be pretty corrosive.

Originally I thought it was a spill also, and the affected area was originally very small.
However on inspection it appears to be from the inside (although it could have been initiated by a spill on the outside).
Maybe an example of microbial growth which apparently can happen in fuel storage tanks when the conditions are favourable. The fuel storage in this case is more than 30 years old.
 
Could be some bad steel? I have a 72 tank that has rust holes all the way up one side. and bottom seams but nothing on the other side.
