Taking a hint from @Mailman in the " Standard issue" thread I put 1/2 my new to me front fender into vinegar today. I may just look for some rusty wrenches, taps and dies too.View attachment 204164
Nice! I look forward to seeing your results!

Seems the vinegar removes the rust. I will shoot the inside of the fender with rattle can undercoat if it cleans up nice.Vinegar and soap? Or full strength vinegar?

Since it's not a nut n bolt restoration this one is a good fit, look and the bit of extra width is a good thing. Thanks Oldfartaussie. This was my first motorcycle. I bought it back in 1979 as a basket case. Rebuilt it, wrecked it, rebuilt it again back in 2010, and then parked in for several years. Although I should really be working on my daily rider, I want to get this one cleaned up and detailed out a bit. Having trouble finding replacement rims. I can't seem be able to true the rear wheel.
Impressive results. I have a bunch of pieces from my beetle that could use this treatment. I’ll give it a try this week. ThxI used full strength white vinegar, you can buy it cheap by the gallon at the grocery store. Here was a battery box I did that way.

I use a product called por 15 to cover any rust areas or areas subject to gravel impacts. Then paint it with 2K poly.View attachment 204143
Paint or Powdercoat?
That should keep you out of trouble. This bike has all the issues and it's time to move on to those now. Petcock, swingarm, wheel& steering brgs, carbs, bla bla bla.....
Indeed! My goal for this coming season is to make it safe, there's a lot of little issues like the front brake line that will get cleaned up as I go. ! completely forgot about the seat on that listThat should keep you out of trouble.
I have been looking at those, but I didn't like the "H" profile. I am in no rush, and would like to find steel wheels.Since it's not a nut n bolt restoration this one is a good fit, look and the bit of extra width is a good thing.
