What have you done to your XS today?

Finally completed cleaning the inside of my tank after about 3 weeks of treatment 😅
Resin remover, followed by a continuous flushing of acetic acid mixed with water. Unfortunately I don’t have any before pics however I’m sure we all know what shitty tanks can look like using resin after a few years. Now mines done it won’t see a drop of that horrible stuff! The only thing I’ve coated it with is a two stroke mix flush and it’s currently sitting indoors for the winter. No need for glade plug ins 👍

Wow! That came out super clean! 😃

Good year, for parts or for fixing up. The carb set is the last and best of the 38's, and the speedo reads past 85, lol.
LOL! the speedo was one of the things I wanted. It's installed now and works great. I also took your recommendation and swapped the mufflers for the 07-0065's what an improvement in sound and ride ability, they're not as throaty as I would like but I will have someone do a ride by before I pass judgement.
While I was at it I also decided to put an end to my clutch woes. I replaced the friction plates, the old ones were at .099 new at .113 problem solved no more loss of clutch at 5k and I don't have to baby it. She rides like a real motorcycle and pulls strong to 7k.
Does anyone have thoughts on how to remove a gas cap with no key?

I don't know how to post a previous post but cut and paste this in the search area uper right hand side of the website page
And where it ask for member put in Jim

Homemade XS1 XS1B XS2 TX650 gas cap seal

Edit : I guess just clicking on what I asked you to cut and paste gets you there
Who knew

I'm not much of a motorcycle fixer upper, but i did find a reasonable match for the red paint on my 1972 XS2. It's Duplicolor Chrysler Inferno Red Metallic and if you look at it hard enough it's not perfect, but it's pretty close, good enough for my side covers. The front cover is the 50 year old original paint and the cover in back is the Duplicolor.
Paint both covers with the Dupli color and no one will know

Today I took the carbs off my 80 special that was leaking gasoline. Found the rubber tip on one of the float needles had become separated from the needle. The bike hasn't been run in a few years, but you folks have inspired me to get it running for this winter.

So to follow up on this question, The tank from my parts mule is a desirable standard filled with rust and a big dent, and the special tank currently in place does not fit the vibe the 76 seat conversion is laying down. In the past I have used muratic acid to clean up rust inside tanks,
1) can a citizen still buy said acid or do you need an EPA blessing?
2) is there something new that works and has the epa blessing that might be easier on my old lungs?
3) what about lemon/lime juice "citric acid" has anyone used this with a good result? I have seen it used to cook fish with good results.
4)Is there a rule of thumb where you would say....that tank is junk! find another one to build?

Vinegar works

welp, yesterday i jumped into a project ive been putting off. a couple of months ago i gave the bike a lil bit of the beans, and instantly there was a rattle somewhere from the top end.
a few days ago, i pulled the engine from the frame and it's on a tc bros stand in the shed now. yesterday i tore apart the top end and once i got the top of the engine off, i found the culprit. one of the lock nuts on the valve adjuster had backed itself off enough to where, when i gave it a handfull of throttle, it came right off and fell into the well where the valve spring sits. the rattling was the nut bouncing around with the spring. right now im waiting on some new gaskets and rubber rings from mikesxs, and hopefully the install of the engine into the frame wont be so bad. i'm pretty nervous because the previous owner did a pretty trash job on rewiring the bike. i know i can slap it back together as it was, but im probably going to want to make it better, and it's a hell of a mess.

Hi there!
I have had great results from using acetic acid which is basically high strength or concentrated white vinegar, I used a 30% strength product that I ordered from Amazon mixed with water. Take a look at my post above. I forget the ratio I used however try 2.5l of it and the rest water to fill or brim the tank. Let it sit over night or a few days, pour out through a cotton sheet into a bucket or two to catch the rust and reuse that same acid. Mine took 3 weeks until I was happy but then I left mine for a few days each time as I work long hours.
I hope this helps 👍

Blimey that was a good save on the top end.
The wiring looks totally Sh*t and will let you down at some point; probably when you are miles from home and without tools!
I would do the rewire sooner than later.

Getting my new to me XS in reliable riding condition.

Replaced my sprockets, chain, clutch push rod bushing and seal, clutch cable and lever.

Haven't got the rear wheel on yet to ride it but the friction comparison between the old clutch cable and new one is a night and day difference. The lever slop is also substantially improved. I suspect the cable friction may have contributed to my clutch slipping issues but regardless I've already got a new clutch in hand so I'm still going to replace the clutch friction plates and springs next. At that point I'll at least know what I'm dealing with.
