Welder's penetrate deeper!!
Hi guys! New to THIS site, been on others.
Ive had my 80 xs since, hmm, may 05. I took a full degreed welding course,(and passed). In my first quarter, one of the students had a basket case 80 650. Clean title, 50$, im in. I use it for extra credit. and good thing I did. Had a hell ofa time learning the blueprint stuff. took it twice. the first go-round, instructor said good enuf, but offered it to me again in final quarter.
I had no idea what i was getting into. I had a suzuki 370 i rode in the woods when I was a kid, (mid 80's, I'm 37 now). then Got a 2003 Suzuki marauder 800 in 04. Flipped out for a year, then went back to school.
She was ruff, I tell yah. No wheels, been sitting fo years, rusted, locked front brakes, supposedly it had mags, but I preferred wires any ways, hadnt seen the motor yet, no bars no seat, no tank, crushed rear fender, no head light, no tail light, when I got the motor, it turned over, but no compression on one side. when I peeked in the plug hole, no piston. later on tear down, that piston pin had give in, and crushed the piston, cracked and folded in half. With all the alum. sand in the bottom, I half expected to find katkrap in there
So I tear it all down, get the frame dipped and stripped, hard tailed it, and started the rebiuld. I have new sleaves, pistons 1.5 over, rings. resurfaced the head, new valves, need to do the carbs(bs34) next. .
Since I didnt have a tank, I went to some swap meets and found a sporty tank, stripped it, rinsed it out, put the cap back on and rusted it out almost immediately. junked it, got a late 60's sporty tank, did not strip and rince, sent to a painter friend, who shot it in black.
The frame geometry didnt change much. It isn't lowered, or raked, but it is streched 2 inches. I used a frame fixture the guy I bought it from made from a hospital bed.
I have a harbor frieght offroad head light, i will use the type of front blinks that clamp to the forks, the rears are small after markets, and am currently wiring the turns. I will use the originall switch boxes, but I polished them up. they shine up very nice. The tail light is a lens from a 59 chrysler(christine). I made a backing plate for it, and the 1/4 inch sissy bar that wraps up and around. I use a cut down 72 rear fender for the back, shaved the forks, but kept the brakes.
The engine electrical is done, thanks to Marvin DeLack of wiseguyschoppers in marysville, washington. I used a small breaker type switch box to hold the TCI box, and the soon to be fuse panel. I dont have a coil yet, and thats the only thing keeping me from trying to start it.
Things I need: Chain, coil, carb rebiuld, clutch plates(drive and friction)
Things I should do: finish blinkers, horn, killswitch.ick
Once I get it done and carbs dialed in, it will all come back apart for real paint, and organize wires.
The frame is darker green than the camera says. Soory its so big, I'm not good at posting pictures.
