Love the kickstarter you made! Since it a big piece of steel (similar to the OEM one) its heavy. I wonder if it could be made out of titanium...

I guess anything is possible, and i agree it is a heavy piece.
All I know is my workmate can't wait for the day my weld snaps and leaves me stranded..he really is an arse

  4. Spectacular build you are doing. Very, very nice work! Love the capping of the welds, with the intent to put clear on after. Can't wait to see it !

In my break times at work this week I made some clutch spring centre retainers to replace the oe ones as the heads had seen better days.I also used some socket cap bolts instead of cross heads for piece of mind.

Some MXers have alloy kickstarters, and some Yamaha models (425 and 450s ?) actually fits the XS 650, as well as the RD 250/ 350/ 400 models. The all share the same spline. This one may be an ok alternative: https://www.ebay.com/p/4008420197

Awesome work man. Very inspiring. Is that silicon bronze over tig welds?

Thanks bud..yes it is.I have always loved the look of bronze welds whether it be tig welded or brazed. I haven't acquired the true skill of gas brazing bronze quite yet

Same here man. I’m doing something similar with the silicon bronze, finding that pulse and a plenty big cup helps with the way it wants to kind of sag while going vertical up.

That's right.I found it has characteristics not unlike solder but not quite as fluid...and this can make vertical runs look less tidy. They do clean up well though with a wire brush.

I plan on using a black oxide finish where it makes sense, as the silicon bronze doesn’t accept that. Leaving it gold while the rest of the tube is blackened. Probably preaching to the choir here.

Ok...so here I am again after some time away and I must apologise for the lack of posting and photos....I have been trying to keep my hand in on the project and I have managed to do a little since my last visit....such things include getting the motor back in the frame since the rebuild, seeing if everything still fits as it should, which it did, which is nice..I fabbed up the exhausts or rather the down tubes and link pipe,I mounted the Vape ignition ready for a new loom to be made.I also scored some brake discs at a vastly discounted price on line so I grabbed those.
Currently I am concentrating on running the wires as neatly as poss from under the seat which will have another small alloy sheet to conceal the finished loom...I am also sourcing some carbon fibre tube for the exhaust silencer because as much as I like open pipes I want to bring the db's down a tad in case I visit a track with noise limits. All the exhaust parts are fitted with springs to make it quicker to disassemble.I have this system on another bike and it makes servicing or removing soooo much easier....Pics to follow.

Great topic mate! Is this going to be a track-only bike or you plan on taking trips with it as well?

O and building stuff just takes time haha, before you know it, it's 2022

Not enough time in the day Bjorn, at least after work and home maintenance .
This will be a road legal bike primarily, using it for fun and ride outs with the occasional amateur dirt track visit. If I finish it Haha..

    Hi Pipes !

Love your work, everything is so clean ! very inspiring.

And I love the rear shock mount, It is close to what you can see on a Honda XLR 600 and it turns out to be very smooth.

    Very impressed, love it !
