Jumping right into my next build, I just finished up my project "Fast & Flow" and wanting to build something completely different (and more rider friendly) Don't get me wrong, I love the bobber, I just also love options :bike:

So here it is, picked it up a week ago, another '83 Heritage Special. In decent shape and came with two motors, one is a '72 and one is an '80. Also two sets of carbs, one BS38 and one BS34. Motor's are both have torn down top ends, but the bottoms look to be untouched. I already had a basket case '82 motor apart in 1000 pieces so that's the motor I'm going to be using for this bike.

The plan is to put it back together, get an OOP inspection done, do a tracker seat, new bars and some different wheels/tires to start. Then next winter it will probably be a complete tear down and rebuild with paint and all that. Here's a few pics I have of the current progress. I'll be doing a complete rebuild on the motor and carbs first.

You have a lot of parts to work with---that is good--you shouldn't have to purchase too much that way. Are you using the mag wheels for your project? How about size of tires?

At this point, I don't want to use the mag's. I really want to do 19/18 spoked wheels with Avon Distanzia tires. 100-90/19 front and 110-80/18 rear. I already have the hubs, I just need to track down 36 spoke 19" and 18" rims for a decent price.

More powdercoating yesterday. Engine will be raw alum, bronze texture and some black texture. I'm diggin it so far.

Dammit fox,
another project already; there's no holding back for you, eh?
But like you posted, there's 8" of new snow out there, WTF else you gonna do?
I'm surprised you found an XS650 that still had it's rototillers, about the only thing XS650 owners all (except Marty) agree on is that the only good use for rototiller bars is for the tenor note in an outdoor windchime.
And yeah, the aluminum deep groove wire wheels are the prettiest that Yamaha ever fitted.
I retrofitted a set onto my Heritage Special one time just for the look.
Later swapped back to the artillery wheels for practicality.
The wire wheels are a bitch to keep clean and they can't run tubeless.
They are on my son's bike now, he's still young enough that style trumps practicality.

Yea Fred. I've got some kind of issue where I can never sit still and relax, always need to be busy doing something.

The rototiller bars are funny, I had never sat on a bike with them till I picked this bike up. I do plan to switch out the 'tiller bars for some Pro Taper MX bars, not sure which bend yet tho.

I could see spokes being harder to maintain over the mag wheels, but like your son I am also young enough where style still trumps practicality. Hard to beat a nice set of two tone spoke wheels.

So due to the large mount of snow that got dumped over the last two days, I decided I would try to stay indoors and tear apart the head, get it cleaned up and do a run of black powdercoated parts. I am really liking the black/bronze combo, I think its going to look great when its all together.

Totally love the bronze, black, and aluminum engine color scheme...very cool, and just different enough to stand out.

Thanks guys. Yes I'm doing the powder myself.

On another subject; just ordered a ton of parts for the engine to get it wrapped up. Also got a few goodies for the bike itself, new signals and tail light.

I like how you guys come up with names for your bikes.
All I could come up with is "bike"
looking goooood so far

Hi Carbon,
my bikes' names vary depending on how I feel about them.
On a good day it's a dull boring ol' "the 650" or "the 1100"
Or descriptive from the paint job, "Silver Bullet" for the XS650 and "Flying Pumpkin" for the XS11.
On a bad day I can be quite creative.
"youblackenamelbrassboundbeveledgedclinkerbuiltcatercorneredpileofscrapwhywon'tyoustartyou?"

Hahah. I think the naming of bikes (for me anyways) is mostly just for use on the forum, and maybe to help with file organization at home. That way I can keep build pictures and receipts separate from each bike. As far as actually walking around calling the bike "Track Star", very doubtful. Like you Carbon, I would default usually to just calling it "the bike".

Package arrive yesterday from XS650 direct with all my seals and gaskets etc. so I was able to get the valves and rockers back together. Nicely cleaned them up, lapped valves, new seals and fresh SS rocker caps. It all goes together so much more quickly and smoothly when you've already done it once before. I got a little excited and tried to install the breather, but then remembered I didn't receive my SS bolt kit for the engine yet. :banghead:

Hi fox,
Wot? No elephant foot valve adjusters?
And I know there's a Porsche dealer in Edmonton, eh?
