You say they believed it was no longer needed. Is it by chance possible to put the compression release back on the bike, being the 4-hole cover is still used? Can one still be found?Later.... 75 I think, they deleted the compression release as it wasn't needed. They never retooled the the castings though... and left the 4 hole on all subsequent models.
It's the only way possible for me to ever get it kick started. Something I may think about. They're harder to come by than hen's teeth, but yeah... it's doable.

Yeah... forgot about that part. Thanks Doug. Its the rocker arm that has to be the right type. Yamaha used the Compression release rocker arm in later models, (after73), till they ran out. Cant remember around what year that was. They had a protrusion on the end on the rocker where the compression release mechanism hooked on the rocker arm. If you bike doesn't have it then you have to loo for that rocker arm.
Thanks, @650Skull. That will be a hit and miss in the future.
Today was another rainy day, after drizzling all day yesterday. It clears up sporadically, and I call the time for a soggy mountain shakedown.
I had the same curiosity until the answers came in.Can anyone tell me why one exhaust valve cover has 3 bolts and the other has 4? My OCD is starting to itch.
Have you considered just installing a fork brace instead of a fender?Dry fitted (loose) the "New to me" fender. Then I did a couple of black tape marks to see where I might bob the fender a little. I am thinking this bike will have left and right 78 style chrome head pipes with short 16"" to 18" reverse cone mufflers with that slight upsweep. I know some don't like seeing original tin cut (butchered?) but this is a 5-10 foot fender, looks nice if you don't get real close with a critical eye. If someone has another option to save this fender, I am all ears.
